I’ve returned to the US after many months in Colombia where I had the chance to intern with a plastic surgeon and learn how the esthetician field is applicable. It was a very valuable experience but the profession is hard on the body, particularly the back due to all the time we spend hunched over our clients face to assure we treat all skin concerns. Upon returning, I stopped in Miami where I had a fantastic hot stone massage at The Shore Club on South Beach. The masseuse was sympathetic to my lower back pain and gave it extra attention but what stood out most to me during the massage was the use of warm essential oils on my scalp and what it did to my hair.

Essential oils are beneficial for many reasons but especially because the ingredients can stimulate healthy growth and relax the body. In regards to haircare, specific oils can help with dry scalp, thicken hair by stimulating the hair follicles, and even lighten hair naturally. During my massage I was able to detect a mixture lemongrass, rosemary and peppermint oils that were applied to my scalp and at first I was nervous about the mixture making my hair look greasy and unclean(on the contrary, some essential oils, like peppermint, can help  control sebum production, leaving your hair oil-free and shiny) but the mixture helped stimulate my curly texture and brought my hair back to life. Below, I will explain specific benefits of what oils were used and how they are best applied:

Rosemary: used to increase cellular metabolism, stimulating hair growth and promoting healing. It is recommended that you apply it warmed to your hair for 3-4 hours but can also be used overnight.

Lemongrass: works as an effective cleanser, bug repellant, and deodorizer. It can strengthen your hair follicles and soothe an irritated and itchy scalp. This is my favorite oil, especially because it makes your hair smell incredible.

Peppermint: Peppermint oil helps to stimulate the scalp, and it can treat dandruff and even lice due to its powerful antiseptic properties

Jojoba: Helps with hair growth as well as moisturizes a dry scalp. This particular oil is also helpful at unclogging hair follicles.
